There are only a couple of weeks left to make your online 2011/12 self assessment return. The deadline for both receipt of return, and payment of any tax owing, is midnight on the 31st January 2013. After this date you will be liable for a £100 fine, regardless of whether any tax is due or not.

If this is your first time to make online tax returns you will need to apply to HMRC for an activation code. To apply for this code you will need your 10 digit self assessment number- your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) - which you can find on any self assessment correspondence from HMRC.

With an average turn around time of up to 7 working days between applying for the activation code and receiving it in the post, it is advisable to apply soon if you need one. HMRC have advised a deadline of the 21st of January for those who need to apply for an activation code. Leaving it late to obtain this code may result in a late self assessment return and a £100 late filing penalty.
